The Biggest GTA Online Yet
GTA Online launched in 2013 and became one of the most profitable live service games in history, generating billions in revenue over more than a decade. GTA VI Online is set to be even more ambitious β but Rockstar has deliberately kept details under wraps.
What we do know comes from job listings, the trailers, and insider reports. Here is the full picture.
Vice City as the Online Playground
The entire Leonida map β including Vice City, the Everglades-style wetlands, and rural Florida areas β will be available in GTA VI Online. The map is significantly larger than Los Santos in GTA V, which means more space for criminal enterprises, races, and player conflicts.
Female Character Support Confirmed
One of the most significant changes: GTA VI Online will fully support female player characters from launch. GTA Online originally launched with male-only protagonists and added female characters later. VI corrects this from day one, reflecting Lucia's prominence in the main story.
Businesses and Properties
Based on trailer footage, players will be able to run:
- Nightclubs and bars in Vice City's entertainment district
- Smuggling operations through the Florida Keys-inspired coastline
- Real estate across Vice City's various neighborhoods
- Vehicle modification shops and chop shops
No More Shark Cards?
There is growing speculation that Rockstar will revise its monetization model for GTA VI Online. The controversial Shark Card system β real money purchases for in-game currency β may be restructured or replaced with a battle pass-style system that provides more value and less pay-to-win pressure.
Cross-Platform Play
Rockstar has not confirmed cross-play between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but it is widely expected given industry trends. This would significantly increase the active player pool and reduce matchmaking times.
Heists Return
Heists were the defining cooperative content of GTA Online. GTA VI Online is expected to launch with multiple heist missions set in Vice City locations shown in the trailers β including bank jobs, yacht heists, and what appears to be a major casino robbery.
