Two Protagonists, One Crime Story
GTA VI returns to the multi-protagonist formula first introduced in GTA V, but with a key difference: Lucia and Jason are partners in both crime and life. Their relationship drives the narrative in ways GTA has never explored before.
Lucia: The First Female GTA Protagonist
Lucia is confirmed as the first playable female protagonist in a mainline GTA game. Trailer 1 opens with her in prison, speaking to a parole officer about her mistakes and her desire to "do the right thing." This immediately establishes her as a morally complex character rather than a simple criminal.
Her background hints at a difficult upbringing in Leonida, connections to the criminal underworld, and skills that make her uniquely capable as a thief and survivor. Her accent and cultural markers suggest a Hispanic or Cuban-American background β fitting for Vice City's historically diverse population.
Jason: The Loyal Partner
Jason appears to be the more impulsive of the two β shown driving recklessly, engaging in firefights, and pursuing a lifestyle of excess. But his loyalty to Lucia seems absolute. Several trailer shots show him risking everything to protect her, suggesting their bond is the emotional core of the story.
The Bonnie & Clyde Parallel
Rockstar has deliberately invoked the Bonnie & Clyde imagery. The trailers show Lucia and Jason robbing locations together, fleeing police together, and what appears to be moments of genuine intimacy between heists. This is GTA's first true love story at the center of its main narrative.
The Antagonist
While not fully revealed, trailer footage suggests a powerful antagonist connected to Vice City's organized crime establishment β someone who has controlled Leonida's criminal economy for decades and sees Lucia and Jason as a threat to be eliminated.
Switching Between Characters
Like GTA V's instant character switching, players can swap between Lucia and Jason during free roam. However, certain missions lock you to one character based on the narrative. Some missions may feature sequences where you control both alternately within the same job.
