GTA 6 Romance Mechanics Are Entirely Optional, Dev Confirms

GTA VI players can skip the romance system entirely if they prefer, Rockstar Games developer Rob Nelson told IGN.

In an interview reported by GameSpot, Nelson outlined how the relationship dynamic works between protagonists Jason and Lucia. Players can choose to guide the pair into a full romantic relationship, or keep their connection strictly professional as partners in crime. The choice sits entirely in the hands of the player depending on how they want to experience the story.

How the Optional Romance System Works

For players who choose not to engage with the romantic elements, Nelson emphasized that the system is completely skippable. "I have to say it feels great—if you are into it as a concept," Nelson told IGN. "Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you."

Those who do decide to nurture and grow the romantic bond between Jason and Lucia will have access to specific dedicated activities across the world. According to Nelson, players can take part in romantic gestures and dates such as holding hands, visiting a local zoo together, or taking a romantic stroll along the beach.

At the same time, Nelson noted that opting out of these activities carries trade-offs. While players are free to skip every romantic interaction, Nelson warned that doing so means players might miss out on other things embedded within those systems, though he declined to elaborate further to avoid story spoilers.

A New Direction for Rockstar Storytelling

The inclusion of a flexible romance mechanic represents a distinct shift in narrative design for Rockstar Games. Nelson highlighted that exploring a romantic connection between lead characters is an entirely new area for the studio's open-world crime franchise.

"I don’t want to say too much more about this because I don’t want to spoil anything," Nelson said in his interview with IGN. "It really adds a compelling element to things, and it’s one of the reasons we wanted to approach this sort of story, because it's completely different for us."

Nelson explained that the primary challenge for the development team was offering emotional depth without forcing players into a playstyle they do not enjoy. "Could we bring some sort of emotional resonance to GTA for people if they wanted to engage with it?" Nelson said. "Could we also provide mechanisms for people to just opt out of it if they're not into it? If they feel like, ‘I don't want a relationship in this?’ That's what we set out to do."
