Spouses are threatening real-life breakups over Grand Theft Auto 6's relationship mechanics, with viral TikTok videos arguing that nurturing an in-game romance is equivalent to real-life cheating.

As IGN reported, the discourse erupted on social media following an extended look at the game and media previews published on August 27. The preview blitz revealed that players can actively manage a romantic relationship between dual protagonists Jason and Lucia. Players have the option to take the pair on dates, hold hands, exchange text messages, and perform robberies together as a unit.

However, the requirement to manage a virtual partner's expectations—including receiving angry text messages if Lucia is ignored—sparked intense pushback among some partners online. TikTok creator Shelby Haas released a video declaring that her partner would not be allowed to play the upcoming title.

"In absolutely no human way is my fiancé playing GTA 6," Haas stated in the clip, pointing to the game's date mechanics, texting features, and intimacy options. "Don't let your boyfriend or fiancé or husband play GTA 6."

Haas's fiancé, Alex Eubank, published a video response confirming he would abide by her stance despite wanting to play the game. Eubank stated that he wanted to play GTA 6 "a thousand percent," but chose to refrain out of respect for his partner's feelings, calling it a form of continuous sacrifice to keep their relationship strong.

Social Media Backlash and Dev Responses

The videos led to widespread debate across TikTok and other social platforms, where numerous commenters agreed that the mechanic constitutes emotional infidelity. Other users pushed back against the claims, arguing that virtual relationships in video games are harmless entertainment. Commenters drew comparisons to games like The Sims, where players have built virtual families and engaged in digital relationships for decades without public controversy.

Despite the online furor, Rockstar Games has made clear that the romance mechanics do not need to be engaged with. Speaking to IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that while Jason and Lucia begin the story with a mutual romantic interest, actively building their bond is entirely up to the player. If players choose not to pursue the romance, the characters will still maintain each other's backs during missions and encounters with law enforcement, even if they remain less affectionate.

"When you bring them together, it feels like you’re a steward of their relationship, and you feel protective of them as a unit," Nelson told IGN. "But this is something we did not know when we started, and it really had to be something we felt our way through."

Nelson also addressed how the developer is handling physical intimacy between the lead characters. While GTA 6 trailers have implied sexual encounters between Jason and Lucia, Rockstar has not confirmed whether physical intimacy can be triggered via relationship meters. Nelson noted that physical intimacy is a key part of any relationship and that the team is continuously testing features to ensure it feels appropriate within the game.

IGN pointed out that Rockstar has navigated romance systems before, including GTA 4's dating mechanics and the infamous 2005 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas "Hot Coffee" controversy, which saw cut interactive content restored by modders and resulted in government scrutiny, legal battles, and rating changes.
