Rockstar Censors GTA 6 Gameplay Trailer on Chinese Platform Bilibili

Rockstar Games has censored the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look trailer on Chinese video platform Bilibili. According to reports from IGN and Kotaku, the publisher replaced its initial upload on the official Bilibili channel with a heavily altered version that blurs out smoking, suggestive dancing, bloody corpses, and sexual content.

Heavy Blurring Across Nightclubs and Crowds

The edits leave large portions of the 27-minute extended look obscured. In footage featuring protagonists Jason and Lucia inside a Vice City nightclub, the censorship covers nearly the entire screen in a massive purple blur. Brief shots on the beach censor sections of the crowd, while close-up footage of bloodied dead bodies is completely blurred out, even though unbloody corpses remain untouched elsewhere in the trailer. Smaller details have been targeted as well, including a scene where Jason's hand is blurred while he holds a lit cigarette.

Delayed Edits and Uncensored Alternatives

As documented by GTAForums user BDF and highlighted by X user @videotech, the video on Bilibili was not originally uploaded with these edits. Rockstar initially published the complete, uncensored extended reveal to Bilibili following its premiere on Netflix. Kotaku reported that the original video remained publicly viewable on the platform until around August 31, when Rockstar replaced it with the censored cut. The exact reasoning behind the delayed alteration remains unconfirmed by Rockstar Games.

Curiously, the censorship appears confined to this specific video on Bilibili. Older GTA 6 trailers previously uploaded to Rockstar's Bilibili channel remain available without any blurring or edits. Furthermore, Kotaku reported that users visiting Rockstar's official Chinese website without a VPN can still watch the full, uncensored extended gameplay video accompanied by Chinese subtitles.

Community Reaction and DMCA Takedowns

The sudden modification triggered discussions on Chinese social platforms such as Tieba. According to forum reports, opinions among local players remain divided. Some users speculated that Rockstar introduced the heavy blurring voluntarily to protect younger audiences from mature themes. Other community members argued that the censorship reflects bias from Take-Two Interactive, claiming the publisher made unnecessary assumptions about regional viewing expectations.

To enforce the change, Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive have issued copyright takedowns against users re-uploading uncensored clips to Bilibili. BDF noted that several users who re-uploaded the original, unblurred footage had their uploads removed under DMCA notices issued by Take-Two.
