UK Console Sales Jump 33% Following GTA 6 Netflix Reveal

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console sales surged in the UK following the Grand Theft Auto 6 Netflix deep dive. Figures compiled by Nielsen IQ and reported by The Game Business show PlayStation 5 hardware sales rose 33 percent, while Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S hardware jumped 34 percent. Nintendo Switch 2 sales also experienced an increase of roughly 33 percent in the same window, despite Grand Theft Auto 6 not being scheduled for release on Nintendo's platform.

November Launch and Workplace Leave

The hardware momentum arrives as Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive target a November 19 release date for Grand Theft Auto 6. Considered the most anticipated game of its generation, the title's launch timing has already begun affecting workplace plans. Reports from Gizchina highlight that players are securing time off work in advance of launch day, while some employers are directly offering employees the day off so they can play at launch.

In the wake of the major showcase, Rockstar Games has also kept focus on its existing title. Polygon reported that Rockstar announced a major update for GTA 5 just days after the GTA 6 reveal.

Analyst Perspective on Hardware Trends

Despite the initial sales spike across UK retailers, industry analysts urge realistic expectations regarding long-term hardware growth. Analyst Ronan Patrick, speaking via The Game Business, warned that hopes for a transformative hardware sales wave driven by Grand Theft Auto 6 might be overstated.

Patrick noted that while high-profile launches like Grand Theft Auto 6 and Call of Duty will expand the total console install base, the overall bump will not be particularly massive. According to Patrick, fears surrounding software engagement are likely overblown because players consistently dedicate the lion's share of their time to older titles.

Comparing the current situation to the hardware shocks during the 2020-2021 GPU shortage, Patrick observed that engagement and revenue were not knocked off course during that period. Instead of stopping consumer activity, such supply disruptions primarily caused a reallocation of spending directly into software, a pattern that may repeat as players balance new releases against established games.
